Photos: Get It Together: Finding Your place in the Changing Church Culture

January 2026

Have you noticed that things seem to be different at work these days? On January 24th, our chapter met to consider how changes in the national culture are being reflected in local church communities and how we musicians can successfully navigate shifting circumstances. Organizer Chris Cook introduced four speakers to share their thoughts on these important questions.

Carolyn Klumeier, a marriage and family therapist, vividly described the ways that stress reactions can be interrupted and managed. She highlighted the need to cultivate a calm presence and connection to community. Music is one of the most powerful tools in forming and sustaining church communities.

Paul Carmona, retired priest and college professor, shared some insights from a historical perspective, especially noting that musicians have always crossed over lines in order to bring the healing gift that music offers, regardless of conflicting theological positions.

Megan Benjamin, an ordained chaplain, revealed what pastors talk about when they are together. Topics range from concerns for their own families, the pressures of attendance numbers, insecure church finances, changing technology, administration vs. spirituality, their fear of “messing up,” and their need to be creative. She also highlighted that music can often speak where words fail. Pastors need to know how to utilize its power for the health of their congregations.

Tony Cook, a church business specialist, pointed toward the intrusion of government regulation into the ways that the church operates. Laws regulating working conditions must now be implemented without regard for their effect upon staff or the customs of the church. He emphasized the need for all staff to share responsibility and accountability to maintain a healthy work environment.

The afternoon included plenty of small group discussions where everyone had a story to tell. Many thanks to each of our presenters and to our hospitality team, Dale Sorenson, Cheryl Seppala, and Ron Jessee. They prepared marvelous refreshments and a remarkable swag bag of gifts.
